LIFE BITS – Interactive audiovisual installation
Cable bacteria have been around for millions of years, but they were only recently found in the sediment of the ocean. Their discovery was a true milestone for the field of microbiology. These microorganisms can be centimeter-long and perform a unique metabolism by which they can naturally generate an electric current. They do so by performing long-distance electron transport, moving electrons from sulfide (their energy source) to oxygen (their favorite electron acceptor) over centimeter distances. Cable bacteria are considered to be ecosystem engineers, contributing in several ways to the ecosystem they inhabit.

LIFE BITS is an inside look to perspectives and utopias of this unique kind of microbial life, through sonic translation of their DNA sequences and visual/spatial portrayal of their life environment, reflected in an octophonic (8.1) audiovisual installation, that invites the public to immerse themselves and interact with their surroundings.

LIFE BITS is a research-based installation project in continuous development. For this edition, artists Beatriz Gijón and Ewoud Van Eetvelde have been working for one month residency at PAS eV. in collaboration with scientist Stefano Scilipoti.

Entrance in the courtyard, Aufgang II, 1 OG
Doors 19:00, installation starts at 19:00, performances at 20:00.
