SUMMARY:Shannon Lay (Sub Pop) / Grimson
DESCRIPTION:Shannon Lay (Sub Pop) / Grimson31.07 20:0012€ door donationRub off the Dark presents a impromptu concert with Shannon Lay (US)\, with special guest Grimson (US/DE).Shannon is opening for O Sees the next day\, so we’re super excited to host her at short notice in PAS.  \n\n\n\nShannon Lay’s music is shored by radical empathy. After 15 years of writing\, recording and performing her singularly gentle songs in venues around the world\, the self-taught singer-songwriter is most concerned with how her music may help people in emotional and spiritual need. In a world of persistent change\, Lay’s goal is to have concentrations of love and energy in her work that double as a helping hand or a voice whispering “everything is going to be ok.” The singer’s abiding belief is that immense change also means invaluable transformation and permanent relief. Intention is her North Star. Hailed by publications such as Pitchfork\, The Guardian\, SPIN and Uncut magazine\, Lay’s solo albums\, including “Geist\,” “August”\, “Living Water\,” and “All this life goin’ down” are noted for their thoughtful and entirely tender reflections on life’s big questions. Her seraphic voice has drawn comparisons to British folk icons Anne Briggs\, Sandy Denny and Vashti Bunyan. Though an old soul\, Lay aims to meet her listeners in the present. For her\, creating a song\, a recording or a live performance that is relatable and communal is of the utmost importance for we are constantly in flux and those unknowns\, met with compassion\, can be beautiful.  \n\n\n\nGrimson \n\n\n\nAfter beginning in New York’s underground scene\, 26 year old Swedish/American songwriter  \n\n\n\nAiden Berglund made his way to Berlin in the midst of the pandemic and began recording as Grimson\, shifting his style into Burton-esque Gothic rock accompanied by sweet harmonies and baroque pop arrangements. Grimson found an audience on Tiktok for his dark humor and challenging yet radio-ready singles\, which has amassed over a million streams and views on his songs\, animations\, and viral videos. He incorporates an intricate multimedia element into the world of his songs\, pulling from his work as a character designer and animator\, which includes the video for Weyes Blood’s “It’s Not Just Me\, It’s Everybody” and visuals for Jose Gonzales\, Sharon Van Etten\, and more. In 2024\, Grimson supported other major Tiktok artist and chamber pop bastion ROAR on their European tour\, securely cementing Grimson’s already strong appeal to young and wildly enthusiastic fans. For his bombastic live set\, Aiden enlists help from Berlin-based and highly sought-after UK and Irish session musicians who have worked with Gang of Four\, Tricky\, James McCartney and more. EARMILK named Grimson as one of the top 5 artists to watch during the New Colossus Showcase Festival in NYC in March. \n\n\n\nIn July\, Grimson released the first single off his upcoming Summer EP\, out August 15.  \n\n\n\nClick here to buy ticketsSell tickets online with Ticket Tailor

SUMMARY:Alasdair Roberts (Drag City) / Fredrik Rasten - Duo
DESCRIPTION:Rub off the dark presents:Alasdair Roberts & Fredrik Rasten Support by Joey Gavin \n\n\n\nThe Scottish/Norwegian duo of Alasdair Roberts (Drag City) and Fredrik Rasten fuses their respective work with traditional music\, folk song and experimental minimalism. Their first encounter was in the septet ‘Alasdair Roberts og Völvur’\, which released the LP «The Old Fabled River» on Drag City Records in 2021\, featuring Roberts-originals and a blend of Scottish and Norwegian traditional songs. In duo\, Roberts and Rasten have so far focussed on traditional Scottish narrative ballads\, often with long durations\, and where slowly evolving musical materials build up throughout the strophic verse-structure to emphasise the storytelling. The duo employs both field recordings and printed sources of traditional song as the basis of their interpretations\, often evolving new original compositions and always resulting in a meeting point between time-honoured and contemporary forms of musical expression. Roberts and Rasten choose ballads with care\, favouring time-transcending narrative themes that both bear witness to the day and age of their origin and are relevant to our times\, be it politically\, culturally or ethically. Both musicians sing and play a variety of instruments\, Roberts’ clear and unadorned vocal delivery blending with Rasten’s sensibilities of just intonation tuning and timbral qualities of sound.Joey Gavin is an Irish songwriter and guitarist based in Berlin. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Luke Fowler \n\n\n\nClick here to buy ticketsSell tickets online with Ticket Tailor

DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nRub Off The Dark presents Josephine Foster 27.06.2025 Josephine Foster is a singer-songwriter-composer whose voice seems to drift from another time. For over two decades\, she has crafted a singular body of work. Her music carries the soul of old folk songs\, operatic hymns\, and blues\, yet moves freely\, like a dream half-remembered. Born in the Mountain West\, she sang in a log cabin church as a girl before setting out on the road\, trhough Chicago’s back rooms to Spanish countryside villages and in and out of Nashville\, she has shaped a body of song that mirrors her wandering heart. Playing guitar\, piano/organ\, harp\, or autoharp\, Foster moves effortlessly between structure and spontaneity. Her performances feel both intimate and otherworldly\, drawing listeners into a world uniquely her own. A poet and visual artist as well as musician\, her playful ink pieces expand upon lyrical themes of her songs. \n\n\n\nANAÏS TUERLINCKX is an experimental pianist who desarticulates the instrument and takes its core\, the frame and strings\, as the main sonic material for her practice. She has roots in free improvisation and is inspired by aesthetics from contemporary music\, free jazz\, noise and electro-acoustic music. \n\n\nhttps://www.anaistuerlinckx.com \n\n\nClick here to buy ticketsSell tickets online with Ticket Tailor

SUMMARY: Donavazi Project
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to present the Donavazi Project — an intimate performance where piano\, voice\, and percussion come together in a bold reimagining of Iranian musical expression. \n\n\n\n🎹 Piano\, Voice: Mazyar Younesi @mazyaryounesi🥁 Drums\, Percussion: Rouzbeh Fadavi @rouzbehfadavi✨ Guest Artist: Vibraphone Roshanak Rafani @rosharafani \n\n\n\nThe musicians behind the @donavazi.project \, Mazyar Younesi and Rouzbeh Fadavi\, came from Tehran and are now unexpectedly stuck in Europe — far from their families and friends during a deeply painful time. \n\n\n\nThis moment is not easy for them\, but they also don’t want to carry it alone. So instead of a formal concert\, they invite you to a gathering of care\, connection\, and shared presence. \n\n\n\nIn the video\, recorded before recent events\, they talk about their musical process and artistic vision. \n\n\n\nExpect improvised music on piano\, drums\, vibraphone\, and the Iranian Modular System — alongside open conversations\, space for feelings\, and simply keeping each other company. \n\n\n\nThis night is about presence\, not performance — no media\, no spotlight — just sound\, support\, and solidarity. \n\n\n\n🗓️ 17.06.2025 | PAS Berlin | 🕢 7:30 PM💛 Donation-based entry | Everyone welcome

The performers embody hens as mythical\, haunted creatures caught between absurdity and poetic rebellion. \n\n\n\nLayered with clumsy grace\, bird-like twitching\, and ritualistic gestures\, the performance weaves a fragile world where femininity\, hysteria\, and humor coexist. \n\n\n\nThrough repetition and fragmentation\, the hens become carriers of something both sacred and ridiculous — a flock that remembers something we tried to forget. \n\n\n\nDuration of the performance: 15min \n\n\n\nentrance in the courtyard\, Aufgang II\, 1OGDoors 19:30\, start 20:30

SUMMARY:Neu Berlin Institute of Improvised Music vol. 29
DESCRIPTION:29th session of ‘Neu Berlin Institute of Improvised Music’:At the celebrated PAS Berlin The I n s t i t u t e is hosting a new improvisational session. We welcome you! \n\n\n\nIn this case the opening group will be: \n\n\n\nJonathan Lindhorst – tenor saxTorsten Papenheim – guitarFabian Jung – drumsRosemarie Förster – synthesizer & vocals \n\n\n\n///After the opening group there will be put together sessions by the curator.Doors 19h30Concert starts 20h/// \n\n\n\nMission:By bringing together different practices of improvisation\, we strive to open up the often isolated situation of music scenes to each other and prevent a structural conservatism that exists in the field of improvisation. We focus on connecting and learning from all different genres and subsidiaries. Encouraging people from different musical backgrounds and contexts to interact with each other and create a curated framework for immediate composition in a live setting. Because we believe that improvisation can mean lifelong musical learning\, we want to view its ongoing practice and performance as an opportunity for the development of one’s “voice” and to create a regular offering for musicians* to keep trying themselves out in this laboratory and working community. We hope that in this way we can contribute to spreading this common respect for each other and the different approaches to improvisation in all of our respective “scenes” and enable fresh perspectives. The idea is not new\, of course\, but we want to perceive it anew. In our case we take the name away from an institution that was founded in Vienna 2005 under the name ‘The Neu New York/Vienna Institute of Music’ by the now deceased saxophonist Marco Eneidi and still exists as ‘Monday Improvisers Session’ in Vienna.A warm invitation to you\, if you feel addressed\, and if you want to join this process as a listener!–MIIMKDGraphic Design by Daphné Lejeune / https://lejeunedaphne.com/
